on clay molding and ceramics where the clay is a material that
relies on touch from the hands. I began to work with diverse volunteers who all had one thing in common: being severely visually impaired. They were thirsty to try something new and to be able to create something despite the visual impairment. This group was from Múlabær, which is a day training for the elderly.
The idea for this project originally came from a chat that I had with my grandmother, Ella Ring (Anna Elín Ringsted). She is born in 1924 and has very limited sight. Ella began to talk about the longing she has towards handwork and what it would be nice to still be able to create despite the visual impairment.
The project was named Ellu skálar (e. Ella´s bowls) in honor of my grandmother. With this group in Múlabær, we created these water and food bowls for pets. The bowls come in two sizes and are double fired with food safe glaze. The food bowl is a slowfeeder bowl that prevents the animal from eating too fast which can cause digestive problems and other disorders.
